How To Take Amazing Bathroom Photos Like A Pro [5 Steps]

Want to show off your new bathroom but the images aren't turning out as well as you hoped? You're not alone. The bathroom is possibly the most difficult room to photograph due to its typically small size and reflective surfaces.

That's why we've created these 5 easy steps to help transform your interior bathroom photos and get you shooting like a pro!

1. Keep It Clean

Take a look at the best bathroom photos and you'll see that they all have something in common - cleanliness and attention to detail. After all, no one wants to see a dirty bathroom.

So, how can you make your bathroom look more presentable?

  • De-clutter any bathroom amenities (shower gel, shampoo, etc) and other items such as toothbrushes (making sure they're properly stored or hidden from view).

  • Clean all dirt and fingerprint prone surfaces, which is usually the whole bathroom, but especially glass and chrome surfaces.

  • Show a full roll of toilet paper (making sure it doesn't unravel).

  • Neatly fold or roll any towels in view.

  • Position mats neatly and in parallel to the shower or bath.

2. Natural Lighting

Lighting can make or break your image. Good lighting is important because if the room is too dark, the image will show visual 'noise' (or 'grain').

So, how can you create the best lighting conditions?

  • Use natural daylight. Natural light is perfect because it's a lot softer than artificial lighting. Why? Because the natural daylight is diffused by the clouds. Depending on the time of day you take the photo, you can get some very atmospheric shots!

  • Don't use your flash! The flash will reflect off mirrors and shiny surfaces, over-exposing areas of the image. If there isn't enough natural light, turn on your bathroom lights as a secondary light source.

3. Position and Angles

The bathroom isn't just the bath. Many people will take a photo of their bath and call it a day. Instead, you can create much more visually interesting and dynamic photos by photographing things from different angles and distances.

So, what camera positions and angles should you use?

  • Fit everything in. Showing as much of your bathroom within one image is important because most people will see this first image and then decide whether to continue looking or not.

To get the best wide-angle photo that includes as much of the bathroom as possible, stand with your back touching the door. (Or outside the door looking in, as long as the door doesn't obstruct the view inside).

  • Don't get too close. Make sure to leave a reasonable amount of space around the subject of your photo, this stops the image from feeling cramped.

  • Take photos in portrait and landscape. Some image sizes will look better on social media platforms than others. By taking both portrait and landscape versions, you're able to choose which is best depending on where it's being uploaded.

  • Don't get yourself in the shot. This can sometimes be difficult if there's a large mirror, but try and be conscious about where you stand so that you don't see your reflection. You can also try crouching slightly to avoid seeing your reflection in the mirror.

4. Take It Steady, Reduce Blur

Now you've tidied your bathroom and found the best positions to capture the naturally lit room, the last thing you want is the images to appear blurry. Blurriness occurs when there's too much movement from pressing the shoot button. Luckily, this typically isn't an issue with modern smartphones.

If your hands aren't very steady, you can use a tripod to stabilize the camera when taking the photo. Alternatively, try propping the camera on top of something or use the camera's self-timer to take the photo without having to press the button.

5. Camera Quality

The type of camera will also make a difference. Although, these days mobile phone cameras will do just fine for decently-lit rooms. However, if you want to get higher quality images, we suggest using at least a DSLR camera, enabling more advanced camera controls.
